5 Noteworthy Benefits of Eating Chilly Makhana as Bedtime Snacks

As it’s wisely said, “The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night’s sleep.” Can’t agree less!!

Getting good sleep is extremely important for our optimum health. It’s generally recommended that one should get around 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night, though it differs from person to person. For some, just 5 hours of sleep is sufficient and for some getting even 9 hours of sleep is not enough. Eventually; sleeping patterns and quality are what matters the most.

When you surf the net; a plethora of strategies are available to promote good night sleep. Here we are talking about one such strategy i.e. ‘a healthy bedtime snack’ which helps us not only get quality sleep but also assures weight-loss.

This bedtime snack is “MAKHANA” also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds in English. These lotus flower seeds are edible after being processed and are highly nutritious. They reduce the risk of developing certain chronic illnesses, good for the brain, and boost the immune system.

Having a handful of makhana as a bedtime snack delivers us a SOUND SLEEP. They possess some healthy properties that induce a good night sleep while keeping a check on your body’s stress levels.

Following are the 5 noteworthy benefits of makhana as the best bedtime snack:

1) High in protein:

It is advisable to consume moderate amounts of protein before going to bed for a sound sleep. Makhana is a rich source of protein and fibre. Being low in fat, cholesterol and sodium makes them the perfect snacks for the night.

2) Maintain blood sugar levels:

Being a low glycaemic index food, makhana helps manage the blood sugar levels. Its glycaemic index is lower than bread or roti.

Glycaemic index is a rating system for food containing carbs. It indicates how quickly food dissolves in glucose once consumed.

Our sleep plays a key role in controlling blood sugar levels. Insulin won’t perform well in people with the diabetic condition, i.e., allowing the muscles, fat & liver cells to absorb glucose from the blood. Hence blood sugar levels increase. If consumed in proportionate amount, makhana helps to manage those high blood sugar levels.

3) Low in calories

Makhana is quite low in calories, that’s why it has become a popular weight-loss snack. Foods which are low in calories help us to get good sleep because they don’t load our digestive system during night time.

4) Good source of calcium

We all know that calcium is an important mineral that develops bones’ strength. But they also help us to fall asleep soundly. Calcium signals the brain for using the amino acid tryptophan to create melatonin, which induces sleep.

Additionally, Makhana is a good source of magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus equally. Having a bowl of makhana before going to bed prevents from disturbed sleeping patterns at night.

5) Anti-aging:

Our body boosts blood flow to the skin while we are asleep; it also makes new collagen in our sleep making our skin look plumper and less likely to wrinkle. Whereas disturbed sleep may make our skin look drab, ashen, or aged.

Makhana comes as our saviour because they are rich in flavonoids, a type of antioxidant which helps in slowing down the ageing process. It also contains an anti-ageing enzyme, L-isoaspartyl methyltransferase which repairs the damaged skin cells.

You can have makhana in multiple ways. Instead of having it roasted plain, tossing makhana with pure red chilli powder gives us a much needed spicy flavour & also satisfies our taste buds.

Chilli powder not only makes makhana look tastier but also provides varying health benefits like it helps acquire a sound sleep, improves digestion, prevents constipation, and increases the production of haemoglobin in the blood.

Chilly Makhana is a quick night snack one can have as it is a perfect mix of taste and health!
